ALNICO

In the 1930's the Alnico (ALuminum, NIckel, CObalt) family was born. These were the first materials specifically designed as permanent magnets for use in meters and instruments. By the 1950's the family had grown from Alnico 1 to Alnico 9. Today, Alnico 5, Alnico 2 and Alnico 8 are still commercially used and are available either as castings or in sintered form. These materials are hard brittle and cannot be machined by conventional techniques other than grinding, but they are widely used across the whole spectrum of magnetic applications. Alnico is exceptionally stable with respect to temperature and most environmental conditions.

Examples of Alnico applications are:

  • Meters

  • Hall sensing & reed switch applications

  • Magnetos

  • Microphones/Voice coils
