Neodymium Iron Boron, a Rare Earth material, has been commercially obtainable since 1985. It is the strongest permanent magnet material commercially available. However, it lacks the temperature and the environmental stability of other materials such as Alnico and Samarium Cobalt. Thus, its use is limited to applications where the temperature does not exceed 300 degrees F (approximately 150 C). It is also necessary to apply protective coatings for use in normal atmospheric conditions---particularly humidity. Fortunately, there are several commercially available coatings that will work for many applications. It cannot be used in applications where it is exposed to Hydrogen. It is not as brittle as other permanent magnets, but still cannot be used as a structural member. Typical applications are:
