RARE EARTH MATERIALS

The newest classes of permanent magnets are called "rare earth" magnets because a major part of their composition is of "Rare Earth" elements; Neodymium and Samarium. Because of their phenomenal strength, previously know applications such as magnetic drives and brakes are now possible in large enough sizes to have commercial significance. They derive their greater magnetic strength from the much higher coercivities, which has also altered the way magnets are designed.
